International Student Finds Grandmotherly Bond in Hartford
April 4, 2024
The first Sunday after Philip Fonjoh arrived at HIU, in August 2023, to begin his MA in International Peacebuilding, he walked through Hartford looking for a church to worship God. With no luck, on his way back, he walked past a bus station where Marion, an 89-year-old lady, was standing. Phillip said, "Hi," and they started a conversation. She told him she was going to church and insisted he come with her. They have been friends ever since. "Meeting her, I felt, was God's providence leading me to her."

Journal of Interreligious Studies Releases New Issue Honoring Dr. Lucinda MosherMarch 26, 2024
On Saturday, March 23rd, the Journal of Interreligious Studies published Issue 41: The Art of Interfaith: A Festschrift in Honor of Lucinda Mosher, who serves the journal as Senior Editor. At 179 pages, it is the JIRS's largest peer-reviewed issue yet, "a testament to how many people wanted to honor Lucinda or sought to write on the theme of interreligious/interfaith studies and the arts," says editor-in-chief Axel Takacs.

In Fasting for Ramadan, Non-Muslim Student Finds Clarity and ConnectionMarch 25, 2024
When Natasha White, nonreligious, and her MA in International Peacebuilding peers attended the event "A Taste of Ramadan" by The Muslim Coalition of Connecticut, a spark of curiosity ignited in her. After approaching her Muslim friends for more information about fasting, she set off to fast for 30 days. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.

BMP Retreat Brings Distance and Local Students Together

Last weekend was the final Black Ministries Program (BMP) retreat for the 2023-24 academic year. The retreat is a new implementation that fulfills the residency component of the BMP Leadership Certificate, made possible by the Lilly Endowment's Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative. The overarching retreat theme was "From Faith to Fulfillment."

Married Peacebuilders Effect Change in Nigeria

International Peacemaking Program (IPP) alum James Danladi ‘20 and MA in International Peacebuilding (MAP) student Shekhe Danladi met in their teens when Shekhe’s family moved to Nasarawa, escaping from interreligious violence in another state of Northern Nigeria. Their interests in fostering peace and care for others quickly united them, and both are making their peacebuilding dreams a reality. “He is very creative, and I’m very hands-on,” Shekhe says.
